Aloha Jimmy & Steph, I just
Aloha Jimmy & Steph, I just wanted to add my two bits to the John Stossel conversation. I find it interesting that people like Stossel and his Douche Bag Guest forget that in the Military, you can retire after 20 years and receive a pension. If a young person enlists at age 18, they can retire at age 38, receive a pension and continue to work until they are at retirement age. You can go into the Militay and become a Fireman, Policeman, Nurse or Teacher and receive a pension after 20 years. What the Fuck?
Where is the outrage from these retards over the money the tax payers are paying for military pensions? And what about the health care we are paying for wounded soldiers in the past 8 years? Stossel knows the truth but chooses to ignore it.
I enlisted in the Air Force at the age of 18 with the goal of staying in for 20 years. I lasted only 3 years after receiving an honorable discharge for Failure to Conform--I'm very proud of that :) I don't think that there should be a blanket rule for how long you have to work in order to receive an pension. If you are the lucky son of a bitch who has survived 20 years of Military service or 30 years of being a Fireman, Policeman, Nurse or Teacher then you deserve a god damn pension! Dangerous or overly stressful jobs deserve different times of retirement than your standard office job.
Stossel would say that the Military deserves an early pension and free health care because they are making the ultimate sacrifice for the country. I've heard this from conservative FaceBook retards when I wonder where the outage is over the Military receiving free health care and it's a bullshit statement. I won't waste your time and save that for another day.
Well, thanks for letting me get that off my chest and. I enjoyed this week's show very much as always and I thank yous for this podcast and your KPFK show. I do plan on donating once I'm employed again and my finances are straight.

P.S. Jimmy...I love your impression of Bill Hick's impression of a Hick.
and of course, stossell is
and of course, stossell is keeping up the fight, still, now in print, against these unions: http://stossel.blogs.foxbusiness.com/2010/02/23/a-real-role-model/ This really distills how expert he is at his technique - watch how his trick is to cram his whole argument into his initial premise, which he uses to pre-judge the elements of the story. He then distorts the facts by employing ridiculous intonations, gross omissions, and wild assumptions; all in order to validate his made-up conclusion. It's the essential trick for every charlatan, kook, bad scientist, corrupt politician, religious whacko, etc. and it's use is a worthy litmus test of an utter fraud. And the thesis of this insult of a "news" item? An administrator who fires teachers after he demands they work more for free is a 'good role model for students.' What an absolutely wretched, abominable character is this mustachioed bagpipe of a man. He deserves the worst, from the best. So keep up the good work.
This is my all time favorite
This is my all time favorite John Stossel clip - http://tinyurl.com/yjjrvg4
Great show guys!
That was hilarious! Two
That was hilarious! Two things I don't understand about the Stossel clips:
1. Did that argument work on anyone? I listened and even the claims Stossel made weren't unreasonable benefits for professional public workers (except the salary thing, which Jimmy tackled expertly).
2. Doesn't Fox Business have any union employees pulling that show together? Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.
Hey Jimmy, Really good show
Hey Jimmy,
Really good show but can you stop playing every clip twice ? It takes away from when something is really important or subtle and is more deserving of a second listen. Usually I get it the first time and the constant repition starts to feel like filling time and I zone out the second time around anyway.
Keep it up, love you all,
Don

Yowza.
I work for the UC system and
I work for the UC system and can retire with a full salary after just 40 years of service. [I could get about 30% of my salary after 20 years.]
Believe me, few people last 20 years in my job, and nobody lasts 40 years. Management makes sure that people cannot stay that long.
The promise of a pension is part of the reason some people are willing to stick it out in lower-paying public service jobs. The pensions are NOT what is bankrupting the cities and states, and it's outrageous that this is even being made into a political issue.
